About the Reviewer: Tim McKay

Before we get into the details, let me introduce myself. My name is Tim McKay, and I’ve been flying radio control model aircraft since 1972. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep passion for building, designing, and flying a wide range of RC model airplanes. Some of my designs have been published in RC Modeler and Quiet and Electric Flight magazines, with over 25 additional designs offered for free on my YouTube channel.

In addition to my experience with RC models, I bring a wealth of knowledge from my time flying in the US Air Force, working as a Certificated Flight Instructor for general aviation aircraft, and most recently, as a B-777F airline pilot. I also cover a wide range of aviation topics on my channel, where I share insights from my decades of flying experience.

Now, let’s dive into the review.

A Tribute to a Legendary Aircraft

First off, let’s talk about the history behind this model. The P-51D Mustang was one of the most renowned U.S. fighters during World War II, serving both in the Pacific and European theaters. Pilots back then loved this aircraft for its long-range capabilities, especially when it was fitted with external wing tanks. It’s always a pleasure to see a piece of history brought to life in the form of an RC model, and VolantexRC has done a great job capturing the essence of this legendary plane.

Out of the Box and Ready to Fly

One of the things I really appreciate about the VolantexRC P-51D Mustang is how easy it is to get started. The model comes fully assembled right out of the box. All you need to do is insert the landing gear into the wing clips, snap on the propeller, and charge the included 2-cell LiPo battery. That’s it—no fuss, no complicated setup. The four-channel transmitter is already bound to the model, so you’re ready to fly in minutes.

Impressive Design and Features

Now, let’s get into the nuts and bolts of this model. Here are a few features that really stood out to me:

  • Brushless Motor:The P-51D is equipped with a brushless motor, which is a big plus in my book. It offers more power and efficiency compared to brushed motors, which translates to a better flying experience.
  • Gyro System:The built-in xPilot gyro system is another feature I want to highlight. This system is particularly useful in Beginner mode, where it smooths out your flight path and makes the P-51D handle like a much larger aircraft. The gyro works quietly in the background, helping to stabilize the plane, especially in windy conditions.
  • Steerable Tail Wheel:I was also impressed by the steerable tail wheel, which is connected to the rudder. This little detail adds a lot to the ground handling of the model, making taxiing and takeoffs much more realistic and controlled.

Flight Performance

So, how does it fly? Well, I took the VolantexRC P-51D Mustang out for its maiden flight, and I have to say, I was thoroughly impressed. Right from takeoff, the plane flew as if it were on rails—smooth, straight, and stable. I started in Beginner mode with the gyros fully engaged, and it made the plane feel incredibly solid in the air. The gyro system works so well that it’s almost invisible to the pilot, just quietly doing its job to keep your flight smooth.

For those of you who are more experienced, you can switch the gyro off using the toggle switch on the transmitter. This gives you full control over the model, making it more responsive and “twitchy,” as small models tend to be. But even with the gyro off, the P-51D handles beautifully.

Landing Gear and Propeller Design

The landing gear on this model is another feature worth mentioning. It’s sturdy and realistic, making takeoffs and landings a breeze. The propeller is a press-fit design, which is meant to pop off in case of a rough landing to protect the motor. While I prefer something more securely attached, I understand the rationale behind this design. It’s a practical solution for preventing damage during those less-than-perfect landings.

Final Thoughts

All in all, the VolantexRC P-51D Mustang is a fantastic little model that I can confidently recommend. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pilot, this model offers a great blend of historical accuracy, modern technology, and ease of use. The gyro system is particularly impressive, making it easy to fly even in less-than-ideal conditions.

If you’re looking for an RC model that’s ready to go right out of the box and offers a smooth, enjoyable flying experience, the VolantexRC P-51D Mustang should be at the top of your list.
