Hi, Tim here! In today's review, we’re diving into the Xiaobaima BM16 Raptor F22, a 4-channel RC airplane designed for both novice and seasoned RC enthusiasts. I had the chance to test it out at the airfield, putting its unique features and performance to the test. Let’s take a closer look at this little airplane from KidToyLover.com and see how it performs.
About the Reviewer: Tim McKay
Before we get into the details, let me introduce myself. My name is Tim McKay, and I’ve been flying radio control model aircraft since 1972. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep passion for building, designing, and flying a wide range of RC model airplanes. Some of my designs have been published in RC Modeler and Quiet and Electric Flight magazines, with over 25 additional designs offered for free on my YouTube channel.
In addition to my experience with RC models, I bring a wealth of knowledge from my time flying in the US Air Force, working as a Certificated Flight Instructor for general aviation aircraft, and most recently, as a B-777F airline pilot. I also cover a wide range of aviation topics on my channel, where I share insights from my decades of flying experience.
Unboxing and Setup
Out of the box, the F22 Raptor is almost ready to go—simply attach the vertical fins, landing gear, and add the battery, and you’re set. The package includes two batteries, a transmitter, spare propellers, a screwdriver, and an instruction manual covering multiple models. Notably, it operates on a 2.4 GHz frequency, reducing interference, and includes LED lights and a 6-axis gyroscope to help stabilize flights.
Design and Build
The F22 has a rubberized nose for added durability and basic landing gear that fits snugly into place. Although you can fly it without the landing gear, belly landings could risk popping off the props. The model also utilizes differential thrust combined with elevons (acting as both elevators and ailerons) for smooth pitch and roll control.
Flight Performance: Exploring 3 Unique Flight Modes
The F22 features three distinct flight modes: 6G (stabilized level flight), 3D (stunt mode), and an intriguing vertical flight mode. Here’s how each performed during our test flights:
- 6G Mode: The first flight was smooth and stable in 6G mode, designed for level flying. This mode offers a gentle, controlled flight, perfect for beginners or those wanting a reliable experience. It took off seamlessly and flew with great stability.
- 3D Mode: This mode allows for stunts, and as expected, the nose pitched upward upon takeoff, giving it a high-angle stance throughout the flight. While it held a powerful thrust and managed turns well, the autopilot kept it in a high-alpha (nose-up) position, limiting the chance for more aggressive maneuvers. This made for a unique but controlled flight, ideal for those looking to enjoy some high-attitude flying.
- Vertical Flight Mode: The vertical flight mode was an adventure. Following the manual, I aimed the plane straight up and added throttle. However, instead of maintaining a vertical position, the nose soon leveled off, with the autopilot taking control. I found it difficult to direct the plane, as the system limited my input, resulting in a somewhat unpredictable flight. My tip? Only try this mode in an open space and be prepared to switch back to 6G if control is needed.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Powerful thrust and smooth takeoffs, particularly in 6G mode
- Great for beginners with stabilization features for smooth, steady flights
- Durable design with protective elements like the rubber nose and sturdy landing gear
- Multiple modes offer versatility for various flying styles
Cons:
- Overly automated in 3D and vertical modes, limiting full control
- Vertical flight mode can be unpredictable, requiring a wide open space
Final Thoughts
The Xiaobaima BM16 Raptor F22 offers a lot of power and control in standard 6G mode and can provide some stunt flying excitement in 3D mode. However, the vertical flight mode remains somewhat challenging and requires caution. Overall, it’s a fantastic little flyer with enough power to thrill and stabilize beginners and advanced users alike.
For those seeking an RC airplane with options to experiment, the BM16 Raptor F22 is an exciting choice. So, take it for a spin, enjoy the flight modes, and happy flying!
